Core Cutting?
Core cutting is a precision concrete-cutting method used to create clean, accurate circular holes in concrete, RCC slabs, beams, walls, floors, and other structural or non-structural surfaces. It is commonly used for plumbing, electrical, drainage, HVAC, ventilation, and other installation requirements.
Where Core Cutting Is Used
RCC slab core cutting – For pipes, drainage lines and electrical services.
Concrete wall core cutting – For plumbing, cables, ducts and ventilation.
Floor core cutting – For drainage and service installations.
Basement core cutting – For utility and drainage requirements.
HVAC openings – For ducts and ventilation systems.
Electrical work – For cable and conduit routes.
Plumbing work – For water and waste pipes.
Testing and inspection – Concrete cores can also be extracted for certain material or structural tests.
How Core Cutting Works
Site inspection is carried out to understand the required opening.
The cutting location and diameter are marked.
The area is checked for possible reinforcement, electrical cables and pipelines.
A suitable diamond core drilling machine and bit are selected.
The machine is securely positioned.
Water cooling may be used during wet core cutting to control heat and dust.
The diamond bit gradually drills through the concrete.
The concrete core is removed carefully.
The opening is cleaned and prepared for the required installation.
Benefits of Core Cutting
Provides accurate and circular openings
Produces relatively clean edges
Reduces unnecessary concrete damage
Suitable for different concrete thicknesses
Helps create openings for multiple building services
Can be used in residential, commercial and industrial projects
Core Cutting vs. Normal Breaking
Unlike hammering or breaking concrete, diamond core cutting removes only the required section. This can help reduce vibration, dust and unwanted damage to the surrounding concrete.
Important Safety Precautions
Before core cutting, the location should be properly inspected. Reinforcement, electrical cables, plumbing lines and other embedded services should be identified where possible. Structural members such as beams and columns require particular care, and cutting should not be performed without appropriate engineering assessment/approval where structural integrity could be affected.
Common Core Cutting Applications

In short: Core cutting is a precision diamond drilling technique used to make controlled openings in concrete and RCC structures for various construction and building-service requirements.
